About
Michael J. Gilmore, D.O. started The Maine Functional Medicine in 2011. With the growing number of chronic problems in the population, Dr. Gilmore realized Traditional Medicine is not well equipped for this. Modern Medicine is best for acute care, not most issues seen in a medical office.
Functional Medicine is a new way of practicing that teaches providers to look for underlying causes of illness to cure them instead of using medication to cover symptoms. Also, there are many natural ways to treat problems. Training in Functional Medicine opened new doors to wellness and provided many benefits to patients.
The goal was to include more Advanced Functional Medicine investigation into standard medical practice. Usually, Functional Medicine providers drop out of insurance and only accept cash for services they provide. Dr. Gimore wanted to integrate Traditional, Alternative, and Functional Medicine into one center. He still does regular medicine while using Advanced Testing and Treatment techniques to help patients.
Dr. Gilmore graduated from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996. He completed his Family Medicine Internship and Residency in Michigan. As a National Health Corps Scholar, he served four years in Houghton Lake, Michigan, in an underserved Community Health Center. In 2003, he returned to the greater Bangor area, where he is from.
In 2005, Dr. Gilmore tired of using only Traditional Medicine. He learned about Functional Medicine, which is better suited to the complex array of chronic problems patients now have. Traditional Medicine is concerned with quickly diagnosing, using medications, or surgery instead of correcting the cause and not having the diagnosis at all.
A light went on.
Dr. Gilmore branched his training out into higher levels. He discovered Functional Medicine. Since then, he continued to fulfill the certification requirements in Family Medicine. He also trained in Traditional Medicine, Functional Medicine, Nutrition, Anti-Aging, Bioidentical Hormones, Nutritional Response Testing, Muscle Testing for Nutritional Issues, and other fields.
Personally, Dr. Gilmore is from the greater Bangor, Maine area. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1982 and enlisted directly into the U.S. Navy. After six years as a Cryptographic Electronics Technician, he went back to civilian life and accepted a job working at Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. While in Michigan, he married his Navy sweetheart, Virginia.
After a few years, Dr. Gilmore quit his job and decided to go to college. Starting at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he excelled in his studies. He was accepted into Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Math and Natural Sciences, a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine.
